Shannon Chapman is an instrumentalist, vocalist, educator, composer and songwriter based in Toronto. She holds two degrees in jazz saxophone performance (B.Mus and M.Mus) from Brandon University, having studied with professors Greg Gatien, Michael Cain, Eric Platz, and Dr. Wendy McCallum. Since completing her studies in jazz, her musical focus has expanded to include singing and keyboard, and her influences R&B, hip hop, and soul.
AS A MUSICIAN, Shannon is the bandleader, composer, songwriter, singer and keyboardist in her self-named original project. Her original music centres on lush jazz harmony and satisfying grooves, shuttling the listener from soulful verse to driving chorus with ease.
At once tender and soulful, funky and driving, her songs combine raw, honest lyrics with a sonic palette influenced by the sounds of jazz, neo-soul, R&B, and pop.
She is also involved as a side person in various other projects in Toronto, including an Amy Winehouse tribute, big bands, wedding bands, motown, R&B, blues singer-songwriter, folk-rock, reggae, and hip hop.
As a leader and sideperson, Shannon has performed on many respected stages in Toronto, including the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), the Beaches International Jazz Festival, the Drake Underground, the Dakota Tavern, the Silver Dollar Room, The Cameron House, The Paddock Tavern, the Cavern Bar, the Cadillac Lounge, The Revival Bar, Lula Lounge, and the historic Palais Royale. She has also performed at the Cube Stage, the West End Cultural Centre, and the Park Theatre in Winnipeg, and at the Bassment in Saskatoon.
Throughout the early years of her career, Shannon was involved in several projects assembled by jazz pianist Michael Cain, including a 2014 tour of Midwestern Canada. She also performed as a vocalist in the Latin band INDESTRUCTIBLE and culminated her long involvement with the Brandon University Big Band as a guest vocalist and conductor.
AS AN EDUCATOR, Shannon has been teaching since 2008 and is available for private lessons on saxophone, piano, voice and flute for ages 6-60. She recently completed a year of teaching at the undergraduate level at the Brandon University School of Music, where she devised and taught Aural and Keyboard Skills (Jazz Stream), along with Saxophone Pedagogy and Small Jazz Ensembles.
Along with performing and educating, Shannon is also available for session recording, arranging, transcribing, composing, and more. See her Lessons & Services page for more info.
