Shannon Chapman is an instrumentalist, vocalist, educator, composer and songwriter based in Toronto. She holds two degrees in jazz saxophone performance (B.Mus and M.Mus) from Brandon University, having studied with professors Greg Gatien, Michael Cain, Eric Platz, and Dr. Wendy McCallum. Since completing her studies in jazz, her musical focus has expanded to include singing and keyboard, and her influences R&B, hip hop, and soul.
AS A MUSICIAN, Shannon is the bandleader, composer, songwriter, singer and keyboardist for her band LAZULA. Previously known as the Shannon Chapman Band, LAZULA is a neo-soul quartet focusing on lush jazz harmony and satisfying grooves, shuttling the listener from soulful verse to driving chorus with ease. Shannon’s original songs combine raw, honest lyrics with a sonic palette rooted in jazz and influenced by soul, R&B, hip hop and pop.
She is also involved as a side person in various other projects in Toronto, including an Amy Winehouse tribute, big bands, wedding bands, motown/R&B, singer-songwriter, folk-rock, reggae, and hip hop.
As a leader and sideperson, Shannon has performed on many respected stages in Toronto, including the Drake Underground, the Dakota Tavern, the Silver Dollar Room, The Paddock Tavern, the Cavern Bar, the Cadillac Lounge, and Lula Lounge.
Throughout the early years of her career, Shannon was involved in several projects assembled by her mentor, jazz pianist Michael Cain, including a 2014 tour of Midwestern Canada on which she played sax, keys, and sang.
For two years, Shannon performed as a vocalist in the Latin band INDESTRUCTIBLE, learning Spanish on the fly, singing lead and harmonies, and playing percussion.
Shannon’s history with the Brandon University Big Band went beyond her undergrad and graduate years in the sax section, culminating in her role as a guest vocalist and conductor.
